World Darts Championships: Outsiders to watch

By Aidan Smyth

So the World Darts Championship is here and the question everyone wants to know is what unknown player is going to go far, so we’ve delved into the stats to find a few outsiders for you.

Scott Williams

Scott Williams is an absolutely outstanding player, he hits 180’s for fun and is one of the heaviest scorers on the tour. Scott hit 6 180’s and averaged 107+ in his demolition of Ryan Searle in the Grand Slam group stage. He followed that up with defeats of Alan Souter and Dave Chisnall in the Players Championships, hitting 7 180’s in the win over Chizzy, before losing to Cullen, despite hitting 6 180’s again.

Scott has a tough draw against Joyce in round 1 and the winner plays Rob Cross in round 2, but there was certainly not a seeded player out there who wanted there first game to be against Williams and he has a big chance of causing an upset.

Josh Rock

This one may not be a surprise to many of you given Rock’s prolific form on the tour this year, and especially his performance against MVG in the Grand Slam where he hit a 9 darter in his first tv tournament.

Rock plays Jose Justicia in round 1, which he should navigate safely before arguably the tie of round 2 against Callun Rydz, before a face off with probably Nathan Aspinall in round 3. It is a nasty draw for Rocky but the youngster will not be afraid of playing anyone and as the joint 6th favourite in the tournament, he could follow in Rob Cross’ 2018 footsteps and win the worlds as an unseeded player.

Sebastian Bialecki

Probably the most unknown of the 3 selections to cause an upset or two in the tournament is the Pole Sebastian Bialecki. He plays against Jim Williams in round 1, which is by no means the hardest draw he could have had, before a game against James Wade in round 2. Now Wade is always tough to beat in set format but the Englishman has been far from his best of late and the Pole definitely possesses the game to beat him.

Bialecki isn’t well known to most but has played in a few majors before. He was part of the Polish team that beat USA in the World Cup, before narrowly losing to Belgium. He also played in the UK open where he won 6 games, including wins over Ian White and Ryan Searle before losing 10-9 to William O’Connor. This young Pole clearly has bags of potential and being in Wade’s part of the draw can only be a positive given the form.

BinkBet Round 1 Treble:

Bialecki, Rock and Williams all to win - 26/5 (6.24)
