World Darts Championships: Day 1 Preview

By Ryan Skidmore

19:00 - Mickey Mansell vs Ben Robb

While no strong opinion, I think Micky Mansell is the safer option in the opener at Ally Pally against New Zealander Ben Robb. Ben Robb has only averaged in the 80’s on his previous experiences at the World Championships and on song Mickey Mansell should just have the edge in what could be a tight game.

Prediction: M Mansell 3 - 2 B Robb

20:15 - Keane Barry vs Grant Sampson

Grant Sampson is a surprise player at this event as he won the African qualifier, stopping a 10th appearance for Devon Peterson in the process. He will be buzzing to be there but his opponent is a tough one in Keane Barry. Barry comes into this off a decent season and has solid scoring power and notably good finishing, with 12.71% of his legs won with a 100+ finish. I expect Barry to win convincingly before going on a bit of a run.

Prediction: K Barry 3 - 0 G Sampson

Bets: K Barry Match Treble 11/8

21:00 - Jermaine Wattimena vs Nathan Rafferty

Jermaine Wattimena will be looking for a better performance than 12 months ago at Ally Pally but he won’t have an easy game against Nathan Rafferty. Wattimena’s form improved towards the back end of the season, capped by making it out of the groups at the Grand Slam. Both players have averaged similar 3 dart averages this season, with Wattimena’s slightly higher and I think he can just edge Rafferty in what should be a close contest.

Prediction: J Wattimena 3 - 2 N Rafferty
