World Cup: Spain v Germany Preview

By Aidan Smyth

It’s safe to say the fortunes of these two teams couldn’t have been more different in the opening games. Germany were denied a 2 goal lead by VAR on the stroke of half-time before going on to lose 2-1 to Japan, while Costa Rica got dealt a hammering by Spain who scored 7. This all means that tonight’s hotly anticipated group game is a must win for Germany, assuming Japan beat Costa Rica this morning as expected, anything but victory would surely mean an early exit from the tournament given the permutations they would need.

Gundogan had a couple of chances in the opener before breaking the deadlock with a first half penalty, and although in the second half Japan overran Germany, it would be a surprise to see any of the Kimmich, Musiala, Gundogan midfield replaced here. The City midfielder is first choice penalty taker, after taking the opening game one despite Muller being on the pitch and at 4/1 he looks decent value to score anytime.

For the Spaniards it was an extremely impressive display in the opener and Marco Asensio played a pivotal role, netting in their rout over Costa Rica, but also playing fantastically in a false 9 role. Spain have so many options in attack that it is a slight risk to back them in the MOTM market, but I was surprised to see Asensio as big as 17/2 to open the scoring here, and as he is likely playing that role again, it could represent excellent value.

In the MOTM market I am opting for Jamal Musiala, the young maestro was excellent when he was able to get on the ball in the opener, and came close to a brilliant solo goal at the start of the second half. Germany have to win this game, so it is unlikely their most creative player will be subbed, unlike many of the Spanish flair players, and at 9/1 he could have a big chance if Germany do win the game.

Finally, in the correct score market I’m going for a bit of an upset with a 3-1 Germany win. It should be a fascinating affair with both teams looking to dominate the ball, but if Germany can get Musiala the ball in space they have a massive chance of causing Spain problems. If Germany do lead late on, Spain will surely throw everything at them, knowing an equaliser would likely send Germany home, and that will give them chances on the counter attack late on, should they have the lead.
