It’s week 2 of our year long countdown to Cheltenham and this week’s selection comes in the Ryanair Chase.
Sir Gerhard jumped the first 2/3 fences poorly in this years RSA but then travelled well and just didn’t seem to stay the 3m trip on what was just his 2nd start over fences.
In a years time he will have had the benefit of another years experience over fences. He doesn’t seem quick enough to win the Champion Hurdle and wouldn’t stay strongly enough to win the Stayers Hurdle, so it seems like fences is the best option moving forward.
Cheveley Park have won the last 3 renewals of the race with Allaho x2 and Envoi Allen, so it’s a race they’re happy to target. Similarly with the reasons I expect him to stay chasing, I don’t think he is quick enough for the Champion Chase and won’t get the Gold Cup trip.
He’s won at Cheltenham before which is a major plus, and is currently a best priced 33/1 for the Ryanair, which seems an enormous price for someone with his amount of talent.
