Skidmore’s Selections - Saturday Racing Tips

Our writer has four tips from today's action, including a NAP at Musselburgh.

Haydock

13:30 - Too Friendly 11/2 1pt win

TOO FRIENDLY has been very consistent again all season and probably deserves a bit of a change in luck as a reward for this. He has been shaping like a return to 2 miles is what he needs, as he is not really hitting the line hard over the longer trip.

If you look at his latest pair of runs over the minimum hurdle trip, he has bumped into Homme Public and Punctuation who have both kept improving since those victories, and are now 12lb and 8lb higher respectively. That makes Dan Skelton’s charge look fairly treated off a mark of 124, just 1lb higher than for those efforts. Conditions should be perfect for him today and the application of blinkers could help him settle which should see him run a good race today.

Musselburgh

14:25 - Dirtyoldtown 15/2 1pt win

This horse is not the most straightforward but he clearly has the talent to win a contest of this nature. DIRTYOLDTOWN was quite well backed at Doncaster last week but he was beaten a street, that can be ignored though as he raced keenly and he was on the wrong side of the track all together, the jockey accepted that too and didn’t even ride him towards the end of the race.

The handicapper has generously dropped him 2lb for that, making him 3lb below when he was 2nd at this track last year in a race where the form has worked out exceptionally well for the grade. Grant Tuer will be hoping that Sam James can get to the front on this horse and although he may have to do a bit to get there, conditions are set for a big run if he is on a going day.

Musselburgh

15:00 - Makanah 7/1 (NAP) 1pt ew

Julie Camacho has her string in great nick and I am hoping they have revved MAKANAH up to the max to start the campaign with a bang at his favourite track.

The sprinter has a record of 1123421 over C&D so it clearly plays to his strengths and this will surely have been an early season target, as it was last season when slightly unlucky to only finish 4th.

All looks set for another big run today from a good draw in stall 11, close to the near side rail, and with guaranteed pace to aim at with Silky Wilkie and Vintage Clarets. Bookmakers have priced him up around 7/1 and he looks sure to be involved in the back end of the race.

Musselburgh

15:35 - Spirit Mixer 4/1 1pt win

Andrew Balding's horse was a big improver last season, moving up a total of 21lb from a mark of 79 to a mark of 100 and he looks to have conditions in his favour to pick up a valuable prize today at Musselburgh. This race is full of a lot of exposed horses and SPIRIT MIXER looks like the one who could have more wiggle room from his handicap mark despite, and booking of Callum Hutchinson to take 5lb off his back will do no harm at all.

The only negative is the fact he is off a big break since his run at Newmarket in July, but I am happy to put faith in Andrew Balding to have him ready as I don’t think this prize will have been ignored. Overall, I think there is a case for him to be shorter than odds of around 4/1 with the only real negative being the track absence.
