Newbury 13:20 - 2m6½f (2m6f93y) Sir Peter O'Sullevan Memorial Handicap Chase (GBB Race) (Class 2) (4yo+ 0-145)

Demachine 5/1 1pt win

I have been quite fond of Kerry Lee’s horse ever since he won his chasing debut at Uttoxeter and I’ve always thought he is a horse with a lot of ability. He has been quite consistent through his career with only 2 blots on his copybook since going over fences.Demachine has a very good record fresh, winning twice off breaks and running 5th in the Ladbroke Trophy last term. His last victory was back at Uttoxeter and he was very impressive that day. That run was off the back of a wind surgery and he clearly improved a lot off the back of his poor Doncaster run. If his breathing is now a lot better, he could prove better than a 140 rated horse as he is still unexposed at this trip. If you pair that with good ground and a course he has ran well at, he looks to have a good chance today.

Newbury 14:30 - 2m½f (2m69y) Coral Bet Bundles Intermediate Handicap Hurdle (Reg' As The Gerry Feilden) (Premier Handicap) (GBB) (Class 1) (4yo+)

First Street 3/1 2pt win

First Street established himself as a very solid hurdler last season following some impressive wins in novice company. He finished 3rd in a Betfair Hurdle and then 2nd in a County Hurdle to State Man, who has since gone on to show how well handicapped he was that day.Nicky Henderson’s horse did dissapoint when well backed for the Grade 1 at Aintree at the end of the season, but he could easily have been over the top for the season. He is back in a lot shallower waters today, giving weight away to some unexposed rivals, but I think he has enough class to beat this field and odds of around 3/1 look very fair.

Newbury 15:05 - 3m2f (3m1f214y) Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap) (GBB Race) (Class 1) (4yo+)

Remastered 7/1 1pt ew Lostintranslation 20/1 0.5pt ew

This looks a competitive renewal of the newly named Coral Gold Cup and the market reflects that with no clear favourite and it makes a good betting heat. My strongest selection of the pair I like is David Pipe’s Remastered. He looked to be travelling the best in this race last year before falling 4 fences out, and the handicapper has been very generous with him since, as he is 4lb below the mark he competed off last year despite not doing a Iot wrong. I was really impressed with his hurdle win at Aintree to start his campaign, that was off the back of another wind operation, and that should set him up perfectly for a big effort today. The other choice is for Lostintranslation who is a classy horse who generally travels and jumps really well. This former Betfair Chase Winner and Gold Cup 3rd ran some solid races towards the end of the season in the Ultima, and the Grand National, just not seeing out the trip in the latter. Joe Tizzard’s horse is very gold fresh and looks overpriced at 20/1 as a potential class angle in a field which looks to lack a future Gold Cup horse.
