Skidmore's Selections: Saturday Racing

Doncaster

13:20 - Tomfre 8/1 EW

Conditions looked pretty tough at Doncaster yesterday and one horse who will be licking his lips at the prospect is Tomfre who has not seen his beloved soft ground all summer. Unsurprisingly he has had an ineffective campaign on good ground but the one positive to come out of that is that he has took a big slide in the weights, starting the season off 101 and arriving today off 86, a 15lb fall. On ground described as soft or heavy Ralph Beckett's horse is four wins from nine, a 44% strike rate. If you combine these things with his record at Doncaster over 7f where he is two wins from four, a 50% strike rate, then he looks a threat to all of his rivals today.

Cheltenham

15:15 - Editeur De Gite 3/1 WIN

Niall Houlihan gets back on board Editeur De Gite today and Niall boasts an unbeaten record on the horse, with both wins coming over the course and distance of today’s race. Those wins did come in handicaps off marks of 140 and 147 with Niall taking off 5lbs each time, but he has proved his new mark of 153 is not beyond him as he ran a blinder in the Grand Annual on ground that wouldn’t have suited. Cheltenham really suits his running style and I expect regular aggressive tactics to be employed. I think his fast jumping will take a lot of his rivals out of their comfort zone and if all goes to plan his class will make him very difficult to peg back, despite conceding weight all round.

16:10 - Came From The Dark 15/2 WIN

It wasn’t long ago that Ed Walker’s sprinter looked destined to be a pattern level performer, but unfortunately for connections that hasn’t quite worked out. He worked his way through the handicap ranks throughout 2020/21 ending his 2021 campaign by winning the G3 Coral Charge at Sandown off a mark of 108. This of Dark Angel has since had issues meaning he has had a year off the track, and his first few efforts this season were uninspiring. However, there was a lot more promise last time out at Ascot, this run came off the back of a wind operation and he travelled like his old self but just didn’t see out the finishing effort. What is very interesting today is that it is second run his since the wind operation, this worked the oracle in 2021 when winning at Newbury. He is now a very well handicapped horse running off a mark of 101 and Saffie Osbourne takes off 3lb today with ground conditions ideal, he looks a big player back in a handicap.

17:00 - Mamoon Star 16/1 EW

Fergal O'Brien really targets the showcase meeting at Cheltenham as noted on yesterday's column and he specifically has a brilliant recorded in the concluding bumper in which he has saddled three of the last five winners. It is no surprise to see him have three runners in the race today and I am quite keen on the outsider Mamoon Star who has Conor Brace in the saddle, who funnily enough won this race last season on Fergal's outsider Bonttay. Mamoon Star ran a nice race on debut before going on to finish 3rd to future Champion Bumper 6th Poetic Music at the New Year's Day meeting at Cheltenham. He was given a lot to do that day and really stayed on well through soft ground. That experience of the Cheltenham hill should stand him in good stead against his rival's today and he looks overpriced at the double digits chalked up this morning.
