Skidmore’s Selections - Saturday 22nd July Tips

Newbury

14:25 - Novel Legend 5/1 1pt ew

NOVEL LEGEND has been rising through the handicap ranks since being upped to take on marathon tests as a 4-year-old and should go well again today in this competitive staying handicap at Newbury today.

James Fanshawe’s gelding opened his campaign with a dominant win on the all-weather at Kempton and backed that up with an impressive victory on soft ground over today’s C&D. He was then left poorly placed and in my opinion should have won the Chester Plate under a penalty next time up and then went on to run another good race at Royal Ascot. It is easy to mark up that effort too when finishing 7th as he met trouble in running.

With no real blot on his copybook this season, I think this son of Nathaniel looks worth siding with and can continue on his upwards curve.

Newbury

15:00 - Annaf 9/1 1pt ew

ANNAF ran a stormer to finish 3rd in the King’s Stand and wasn’t seen to best effect at Sandown a couple of weeks ago in the Coral Charge when left with a lot of ground to make up, doing well in the circumstances to finish a never nearer 4th place.

A step up to 6 furlongs should suit Mick Appleby’s colt and there looks a guaranteed strong pace to run at too which should help, as should the track which is a lot more open than Sandown. The market seems to have overreacted to his last run and odds of around 9/1 look worth playing accordingly.

Market Rasen

15:15 - Francky Du Berlais 5/1 2pt ew

Peter Bowen’s charge is searching for his third consecutive win in the Summer Plate and looks to hold excellent claims of becoming the first horse to do that.

He won this race off a mark of 137 in 2021 and a mark of 139 in 2022 and he arrives this year off a mark of 140 so is not handicapped out of things. The winter and spring campaign was not crucial to FRANCKY DU BERLAIS but he ran some sound races anyway, including taking in a tilt at the Grand National.

He returned off a break with a lovely preparation run over C&D which should set him up perfectly, and for another positive Sean Bowen has chise to ride him over stable partner Courtland who has been in fantastic form.

Newmarket

15:40 - Havana Blue 5/1 1pt ew

It appears that they Clive Cox has found the way to win with HAVANA BLUE, who has relished sitting in behind rivals and coming through late on to ensure his turn of foot is seen to best effect.

The son of Havana Grey has won his on his last 2 starts, those wins coming at todays venue and at Doncaster, both times winning with a bit to spare. He has gone up 10lb in the handicap for those victories but that is more than deserved and if he stays the mile then he looks primed to run a big race getting weight off of a lot of his rivals.

Newmarket

17:25 - Candle Of Hope 4/1 1pt win

CANDLE OF HOPE shaped very well in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot when finishing 5th, faring best of those who were ridden prominently. That run also suggested that a return to 7 furlongs may just be ideal for her as she travelled sweetly but wasn’t hitting the line hard.

The handicapper actually relented 1lb for that run which was staggering and I think she has been placed brilliantly today by Richard Hughes to find a race where she gets both the weight for age and the fillies allowance. James Doyle takes the ride and could grasp this race by the scruff of the neck with the lack of pace and I think the royal filly holds a massive chance.
