Skidmore’s Selections - Grand National Day Tips

After firing in winners at 25/1 and 40/1 yesterday, our writer is back with four more selections at Aintree today, including a pair in the Grand National.

Aintree

14:25 - West Balboa 11/2 1pt ew

This mare has always been held in high regard at the Skelton yard and I think they believe she is a better horse than one that is rated just 135.

WEST BALBOA was pitched into the deep end on just her second start under rules for the yard when she finished 2nd in the Challow Hurdle to Stage Star. She came back this season with a promising comeback at Sandown before going to Kempton to win the Lanzarote under a brilliant ride from Bridget Andrews.

That race was a real war of attrition and the fact that West Balboa battled so strongly to the line despite mistakes showed real quality and I think she could have more to come now upped in trip. She has more than enough ability to be involved in a race of this nature off of her current mark.

Aintree

17:15 - Corach Rambler 10/1 1pt ew

            - Delta Work 9/1 1pt ew

There is no better spectacle in horse racing than the Grand National and the 2023 renewal looks a cracker with some fascinating contenders throughout the field. I am pretty confident of some big runs from a few though, notably CORACH RAMBLER and DELTA WORK.

Lucinda Russell’s horse looks incredibly well in at the weights following his back to back win in the Ultima handicap at Cheltenham considering he is due to go up 10lb for that performance. He is still relatively unexposed having only had nine starts over fences and there could be plenty more up his sleeve; his idling up the hill at the Festival suggested this, as did the way he arrived full of running when asked for his effort. Derek Fox gets on really well with this horse and as long as he doesn’t get too far back, he surely has an excellent chance to bring another National back to the stable, in what would be fitting style considering the recent loss of past winner One For Arthur.

Delta Work has a different profile to Corach Rambler but he has the body of work which suggests another big run is on the cards. The three time Cheltenham Festival winner looked as good as ever back there last month when fending off Galvin and it would be a surprise if he didn’t run into the frame again today. He was too far back in last year’s renewal so it was a huge effort to finish 3rd, he is 1lb lower at the weights this time around and should give Keith Donoghue a great spin around the fences.

18:20 - Centara 15/2 0.5pt ew
