Skidmore's Selections: Friday Pick

Haydock

17:08 - Whitehaven 7/2 1pt win

This is the time of the season that Hughie Morrison’s gelding comes into his own due to the nature of the surface he encounters. He is also a horse who’s form suggests that he takes a while to get fit, as he has never gone close to winning on his first few starts off a break. Haydock should be a real test today with the rain they have had and that is no problem for Whitehaven who has been victorious on both starts when the ground has been described as heavy, which is the going given today at the time of writing.

Another big positive for me is the fact that he won this exact contest 12 months ago and we all know that trainers are creatures of habit so it is likely this has been the plan. He won the race last year in emphatic fashion off a mark of 81 and he runs off a mark of 83 today, with newly crowned champion apprentice Benoit De Le Sayette taking off a handy 3lb making him look very well handicapped. I expect a big run and to be hard to stop if building on his previous two runs.
