Skidmore's Selections: Champions Day

13:25 - Trueshan 2/1 2pt win

We all know that Trueshan is a very high class stayer as he has shown over the last few seasons in both group races and handicaps so it is a surprise to see that Alan King's horse is on a recovery mission today, after he was turned over at Doncaster by Coltrane on his last run. This was a big shock really with Trueshan being sent off as a 2/9 favourite and it is fair to say he didn't look himself that day, hanging badly at times and just not looking in love with the task.I am not convinced about some of his rivals today, especially at the prices, specifically Eldar Eldarov and Waterville who despite their progressive profiles, both have to step up again now tackling their elders to get involved at the business end here. The main danger to me is Coltrane who has been a consistent horse this year and obviously has got the better of Trueshan once, but Trueshan beat him fair and square at Goodwood in the Goodwood Cup when 3rd to Kyprios and I expect that to happen today in a more ordinarily run race.Trueshan is 2/2 at Ascot and those wins were both the 2020 and 2021 renewal of this race, both run on soft ground that he relishes. The going at Ascot is described as Good to Soft, Soft in places at the time of writing, so conditions should be ideal and as everybody knows if he is on his game today, he will be hard to beat.

14:00 - Art Power 5/1 2pt ew

If ever a horse deserved a big day it is definitely Tim Easterby's grey Art Power, who has been a model of consistency throughout his career. In Group 1 6f races he has form figures of 4434548 and if you narrow it down to Group 1 6f races where the going has had soft in the description he has form figures of 4434. He has been very unlucky in a few of these races too specifically in this contest last year and in last year's July Cup, both times having to plough his own passage on the wrong part of the track. He looked as good as ever when bolting up at the Curragh in the race he used as a stepping stone the previous year and I also like the fact that he has had a relatively light campaign compared to a lot of his rivals. On top of all of this, conditions today should be ideal with there being some cut in the ground which he clearly loves, along with the fact he has bagged a decent draw in stall 8. I see no reason why he won't run another big one and he looks a rock solid each way bet with 5 places generally available across most bookmakers.

14:40 - Emily Upjohn 9/2 1pt win

It is arguable that Emily Upjohn is the filly in the race with the most upside and the highest potential to be top class based off her run in the Oaks when she was beaten in a photo finish with Tuesday, I am of the feeling that she was an unlucky loser that day and with a better start she would have won the race. John and Thady Gosden's filly was so impressive at Yarmouth on her 2nd run this season, she certainly made herself known that day and she backed that up and went on to win the Musidora at York emphatically before going on to be that close 2nd in the Oaks. It is fair to argue that the Oaks form isn't as strong as it first looked as Tuesday hasn't really backed up her form but the 3rd Nashwa certainly has proved it to be worthy form.Emily Upjohn ran too badly to be true at Ascot in the King George but that was a messy race with many disappointments on the day. The Gosden team have given her a long time off since then, clearly making today her target, and they have opted to fit her with a hood which could look a very shrewd move. Since partnering up, John and Thady Gosden are 7 wins from 16 with horses in first time hoods which is a phenominal strike rate and his filly today has always been a buzzy type who can be keen in her races so if that can help her settle it could play a massive part in her run today and hopefully Frankie gets a good pace to aim at to allow her to pass rivals late on.
