Saturday Night Boxing: Mayer v Baumgardner & Shields v Marshall

By Craig Simeon

In an all women’s boxing card tomorrow night at the O2 we have 2 50/50 matches at the top of the bill.

First up we have Mikaela Mayer V Alycia Baumgardner. Most brits will know of Alycia as she came over to dethrone Terri Harper in November of last year, stopping the Brit in the 4th round. However that seems to be the best on offer on the Baumgardner resume. As for her opponent, Mayer, she is unbeaten in 17 fights and looks to have fought the better opposition coming into this very heated battle. Having beat the hardy Erica Farias & Jennifer Han , my prediction for this fight is for Mayer to dominate with her boxing ability. She may have 1 or 2 sticky moments early on but I feel she will be too big and too strong which will see Mayer win on points. At 8/15 it's short price, but I still make it a bet.

The main event sees bitter rivals from the Olympics, Claressa Shields against Savannah Marshall. Shields definitely brings in the better form coming into this having won belts at several different weights and beating some good opponents along the way. Marshall on the other hand looks to be the bigger puncher of the two and has the size advantage, but there’s something telling me that Marshall is gonna be too gung-ho and walk on to something and which is why I’m going for Shields to win by KO/TKO at a whopping 8/1. The market would suggest either Shields on points or Marshall by ko but there’s just something in the back of my mind telling me this will be the outcome.
