Premier League Bookings: Yellow Card Analysis

By Sam Cook

Brighton v Nottingham Forest

The earlier kick off sees Brighton host Notts Forest in a game where you'd expect the in form home side to punish out of form Forest. New manager Roberto de Zerbi has continued Graham Potters possession based game and their 53% season average shows this. Forest average only 43.8% and often seem frustrated leading to their 11.3 fouls per game average. One matchup to watch is Serge Aurier/Neco Williams up against Leandro Trossard. Aurier averaged 1.2 fouls per game in his last fully completed season in the Prem and has already been booked on his one PL start this year. If Williams plays instead he also goes at 1.2 fouls per game racking up 3 yellows across his 9 starts.

The midfield battle will see Moises Caicedo go up against Ryan Yates. Caicedo sits 2nd in the league for fouls (19) at 2.1 a game whereas Yates (also playing on the right vs Trossard & Caicedo) has committed 1.4 foils a game whilst being hacked down 2.1 times. This suggests a combative matchup between the two players where both could see yellow in a match officiated by Darren England who averages 3.55 yellows a game and flashed the red card in his last PL match.

Ones to watch:

Caicedo (4/1)

Aurier (11/4)

Yates (7/2 )

Williams (4/1)

Crystal Palace v Wolves

The 8.30 game sees Palace face Wolves and will be overseen by card happy David Coote who shows yellow almost 4 times a game this season (3.9). Palace are a side who commit a lot of fouls with 12 per game and go up against pace man Adama Traore who in his last completed PL season was fouled 2.3 times a game. He's only played 78 minutes so far this season as he regains fitness but has been brought down twice in that short time. He'll go up against the disciplined Tyrick Mitchell however many of Traores dribbles occur on the counter and so left sided central midfielder Jeffrey Schlupp could see yellow as he averages 1.6 fouls a match. Also on that same side is Wilf Zaha the most fouled man in the league at 3 times a game. He's prone to react negatively and if he does so tensions could flare leading Coote to flash yellow more often. New signing Matheus Nunes will go against Schlupp and Zaha whilst providing cover for Traore, as he plays on the right flank of a midfield three, and that task could end in a booking for him.

One's to watch:

Schlupp (4/1)

Zaha (11/4)

Nunes (5/2)
