New Year's Day: Racing Bets

By Ryan Skidmore

Cheltenham

13:55 - Simply The Betts 12/1 0.5pt ew

It is very easy to make a case for this horse as he has such an excellent record at this track, especially on the new course, where he has won twice and finished runner up twice from his four efforts. The handicapper has been very generous with him too which makes him look very well in at the weights with some of his rivals, he is down to a mark of 149, the exact mark he won at the Festival on.

Based off this, any odds in the double digits look overpriced and make SIMPLY THE BETTS a good each way bet with extra places available. We then have to hope David can take it to the max on board!

Cheltenham

14:30 - First Street 5/1 1pt ew

The Relkeel Hurdle looks a fascinating renewal this year where you can make a case for most of the runners. Nicky Henderson runs two including festival winner Marie’s Rock, but it is his other runner, FIRST STREET who I think holds excellent claims.

This son of Golden Horn competed at the top-level last year as a novice having progressed through the handicap ranks and he made a very good return when winning the Gerry Fielden Hurdle at Newbury, giving away lots of weight to all his rivals. He showed that day how strong of a stayer he is at 2 miles and as proven before stamina will be no problem today. James Bowen remains in the saddle today and he looks like he should play his hand in the latter stages.

Musselburgh

14:45 - Homme Public 7/2 1pt win

Oliver Greenall’s charge has been on an upwards curve since dropping back in trip. HOMME PUBLIC beat a well-treated Too Friendly at Wetherby on his seasonal reappearance and backed that up when running very well at Sandown last month, finishing 3rd to Harry Fry’s smart mare Love Envoi.

The ground was very testing at Sandown that day and he should appreciate going back to some better ground considering he has a decent turn of foot. The form of that race has already worked out well too with the 2nd, Playful Saint, hacking up next time and the 4th, Hermes Boy, finishing 2nd in a hot race. Greenall has added cheekpieces to his horse, this could see a bit more improvement too and he looks a big player today.
