Europa League: Yellow Card Tips

By Sam Cook

PSV Eindhoven v Zurich

This is a must win for Zurich against a stronger PSV side and as such I think there's gonna be a big battle in the midfield. Ole Selnaes is a 90 minute man and has been averaging a foul per game. However in Ligue 1 with a sample size of 24 games he is averaging at 1.5 fouls per game. Pair this with a referee averaging 5.6 yellows in the Turkish Superlig and a red almost every other game (68 awarded over152 matches). Selnaes seems a strong favorite for a booking, as does anything involving overs on the cards. PSV to win, take the most corners and over 40 booking points is supported by the recent stats.

Real Betis v AS Roma

The second selection actually comes from one of the earlier games Betis VS Roma. This is must win for Roma who linger on only 3 points compared to Betis who have scored a perfect 9/9. The previous match saw 5 yellows and a red card and I expect similar again. They're officiated by Slovenian Matej Jug who over 182 Slovenian league games records an average of 4.9 yellows. Whilst his Europa record sits at a similar 4.7 yellows per game in 35 matches. Roma center half Mancini is the standout pick. He's seen yellow in all of his last 3 matches and averages 1.7 fouls a game in Europe and 1.4 in his domestic league. He will be facing up against the tricky Nabil Fekir who drew 2.7 fouls per game last season in La Liga and id expect him to be Mancinis target tonight. Another 90 minute man in this fixture is Betis right back Aitor Rubial who has been commiting 2 fouls per game and will face the experienced El Sharaway in the absence of Nico Zaniolo after his red card last week. Rubial screams booking in this game.

Player Booking selections:

  • Ole Selnes: PSV

  • Gianluca Mancini: Roma

  • Aitor Rubial: Real Betis
