Costa Rica vs Germany: World Cup Preview

By LadyD

With everything to play for in Group E, Germany will need to a win today as well as the right result in Japan vs Spain in order to progress into the Last 16.

Costa Rica blew group E wide open with a shock win against Japan last time out, and although the odds are stacked against them coach Fernando Suarez believes his side can still "dream" of achieving what many think is impossible

Germany will be looking to avoid back-to-back bottom place finishes in the World Cup (2018 and 2022), but in a World Cup that has already thrown up many shocks, I'm sure it won't be a straightforward day for the teams in Group E.

The goal is clear for both sides, and with 8.00 cards between them, I expect more of the same in a game which is essentially a knock-out game itself. Over 3.50 cards is 11/10 with BinkBet and with over 4.50 cards coming in at 12/5 I will be making both a bet for today. Stephanie Frappart will be making history as the first Woman to referee a match and the Men's World Cup and comes into the game with an average of 4.21 yellow cards per game this season, so we hope to see more of the same in this tense clash.

The market of the tournament has definitely been the 'Man of the Match' market. With some great winners landed across the site already, there are two players I like the look of today. The first is Ilkay Gundogan at 9/2. Playing a vital role in transforming defence into attack, Gundogan will once again be in the thick of things today. Germany will be conscious that goal difference could come into play, so expect Gundogan to be dictating play for large stints of the game. My second option is Keylor Navas at 6/1. If Costa Rica are to shock the World once again, Navas will have to be at the top of his game. With the Germans likely to dominate both possession and chances created, Navas will be called into action more than any other player on that pitch, and if he stands strong for the entire game, it is unlikely that the Man of the Match award could go anywhere else!

With Germany being as short as 1/10 there doesn't seem to be any value in the match odds markets, so will be sticking to the bets mentioned above. I do believe the task on hand will be too big for Costa Rica (subject to a Navas masterclass), and if I had to predict a score line, I think a comfortable 3-0 win for German at 24/5 would be the way to go.

Bets for the day:

  • Over 3.50 cards (11/10)

  • Over 4.50 cards (12/5)

  • Gundogan MOTM (9/2)

  • Navas MOTM (6/1)
