Breathtaking Baaeed bows out on Champions Day

By John Hall

Legend tells us that in horse racing a genuine world class superstar emerges every ten years. Nijinsky, Sea The Stars, Frankel, I could name more but it’s very easy to confuse absolutely brilliant horses with the world class level and it’s not a term that should be used lightly.

Baaeed has firmly putting himself in the world class bracket with a period of dominance, success and class.

Winning at 6/1 on debut in Leicester in June last year Baaeed simply became stronger with every run. He was odds on for his next four runs before his ultimate test against the brilliant Palace Pier at Ascot. Baaeed went off as a 2/1 second favourite in what many thought was going to be a challenge too far. And yet, here we are, looking back at how much of a steal 2/1 was for such a superstar.

Returning after a 210 day break for The Lockinge Stakes at Newbury he breezed to victory leaving quality horses like Mother Earth, Chindt and Alcohol Free in his wake. I feel it was at this point that even the doubters stood up and realised we were watching a special animal.

Further wins at Ascot and Goodwood took him to 9/9 heading into the unknown at York when upped in trip to 1m 2.5f. This left a slight concern in some people minds especially when facing the mighty Mishriff but once again Baaeed turn of foot saw him win with no fuss whatsoever and if anything looked even more impressive.

The bigger the challenge, the further he wins by. At 16:00 Ascot on Saturday there is little point putting a bet on at 2/9. My advice is sit back and enjoy a “world class” horse at work as we don’t know when the next one will come along.
