Big Bash: Preview and Tips

By Aidan Smyth

We’re heading towards Christmas which means it’s time for the Big Bash to make its return. Sydney Sixers head the outright betting after their runners up effort last year, while the introduction of the UAE T20 means their will be lots of disruption to teams midway through the tournament.

It is very unusual not to see the Melbourne Stars right near the top of the outright market but they could represent good value at a bigger price this year. The batting does look a little light with the injury to Glenn Maxwell but with Marcus Stoinis and Joe Clarke they have real class at the top of the order, with Hilton Cartwright providing the power down the order. Their bowling is arguably the strongest in the tournament, Zampa is an extremely consistent wicket taker and with the addition of Trent Boult, their seam attack looks strong as well.

The batter and bowler markets are difficult with so many key players leaving the tournament midway through. Max Bryant had a disappointing season last year but he showed quality when he smashed a high score of 81 and with the benefit of extra experience, he could be an outside shout in the runscorer markets. He is 12/5 to top score for a weak looking Brisbane Heat team and 50/1 to lead in the tournament. At a shorter price, Marcus Stoinis is 12/1, and will have a big chance of going close too. He showed how dangerous he is down the order in the World Cup, but back at the top of the order for the Stars, his astonishing power will be key to the Melbourne sides chances.

With the ball, Tom Rogers is my pick to top the standings. He took 20 wickets in 13 games for the Hurricanes last season and switching to Melbourne Renegades he will lead the way for the tournament outsiders. The strength of the Renegades is definitely their batting so they’ll need Rogers to be at his best in order to make the top 5. He is 25/1 to lead the tournament in wickets and 5/2 to be the top Renegade, both of which could be good value.

Finally, the 7/2 available on Wes Agar to be the top Adelaide Strikers bowler feels very generous. Peter Siddle was the leading wicket taker last year and rightly heads the market, but at 38, he isn’t getting any younger. Agar had a quiet tournament last year, but the year before, he was in the top 5 tournament wicket takers with 22 and he’ll be looking to find that sort of form again. Rashid Khan is also in playing for the Strikers but misses a chunk of the tournament due to other commitments, so Agar could represent the value.
